A word from Head of Business Development

Dear Student,

Celebrate the gorgeous month of May! The Sun is getting warmer, the birds are chirping, the flowers are blooming, and the garden is growing. As Fennel Hudson once said: ‘May, more than any other month of the year, wants us to feel most alive.’, It is now time to make ourselves feel rejuvenated, refreshed, and relaxed and time to build up a real sense of pace and energy.

Throughout April, many things have happened in UKCE Campuses. We once again welcomed groups of Italian and Spanish students. Our students have enjoyed our social activities from Shakespeare’s Globe to the Tower of London, from the Sky Garden to the Harry Potter Walking Tour.

Some of our agents stopped by to see us. It was nice to hear about the market news and updates. What’s more exciting is we’ve launched our Double Decker Summer campaign and we are really enthusiastic about what we have on offer for you. If you haven’t seen it, yet, it’s worth checking out the video in the link. 😉

We’ve already planned the May social activities for our students and some other marvellous things you can do in London in May. And a reminder, King Charles is set to be crowned alongside the Queen Consort at a ceremony in Westminster Abbey on the 6th of May. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Don't miss it!

And finally, we would like to introduce Hira, our English Course Leader in our Dubai Campus. We had a short interview with her, and she gladly replied to our questions. Should you have any questions about English courses in our Dubai campus, please feel free to contact her directly.

That’s all for April. Until next time, I would simply like to take this opportunity on behalf of everyone here at UKCE, to thank each one of you for being with us thus far and continuing to be with us in the future, and for everything you’ll do to help move us forward from today. Behind every success, there are skilled people and each student is unique.

I invite you to please take some time and have a look at our April newsletter. Thanks, Beren

Share the learning experience, grab a friend, and climb on board this special offer

Most things in life are better not done alone, dancing, playing, travelling, speaking- definitely speaking - and learning a language.

Why learn alone when you could learn together.

This summer, we’ve got the perfect plan for you and one more.

Meet Hira, the English Program Leader from UKCBC Dubai Campus

Hello Hira! Could you please tell us about yourself?

Hira- Hi Beren! I’m a qualified CELTA graduate with a background in Psychology. I’m from sunny Yorkshire but I’ve lived in Dubai for nearly 10 years now and I’m the Program Leader for the English Course at UKCBC Dubai.

So, What’s your story? How did get where you are today?

Hira- I’ve always had a natural curiosity for language acquisition, so a lot of my studies at University were centred around the cognitive processes involved in reading and language acquisition. Getting CELTA qualified was a natural progression for me. I have been teaching English in Dubai since 2016 and have thoroughly enjoyed meeting people from different cultures.

What was your life like before you began working as a teacher?

Hira- Life was great! I was enjoying the many opportunities the beautiful city of Dubai has to offer. I was never short of things to do. When I wasn’t being a tourist, I was at home with my children enjoying family life in the sandpit.

What was most surprising to you about English language teaching?

Hira- I knew teaching English would expose me to students from different cultures and backgrounds which is what was so attractive about it for me. What I didn’t expect was to learn so much from my students. I’m grateful to my job for giving me a wealth of knowledge about how people live their lives in the many different corners of the world. I’ve learnt a lot about how people communicate both verbally and non-verbally (gestures). My classroom today consists of students from the Ivory Coast, Japan, China, Russia and Brazil. This amalgamation of cultures in one classroom, all learning together is a beautiful thing to experience.

Could you tell our students what the achievement or contribution that you are most proud of is?

Hira- Watching the students flourish and become more confident is a joy to see. English is one of the most-widely spoken languages in Dubai and so it’s a pre-requisite for students to be able to get around and use it in their daily lives. When students excitedly tell me how they’ve been able to communicate in the various tourist hotspots, or just being able to talk to a shop assistant makes me feel proud to have been part of their learning journey.

Is there anything or any advice you would like to share with students?

Hira- Immersion into the English language is so helpful when learning English. Watch movies, read books, make friends who don’t speak your language so that you are forced to use your speaking

skills. The most important piece of advice is not to be afraid of making mistakes when speaking. Many native speakers are privy to mistakes, and it is all a natural part of the learning process.
