1. Get into a routine.

You won’t be able to improve your English if you don’t have a routine. Think about school; you had a routine and that made it clear when it was time to learn and when it was not. Do the same with your English at home. You could make a plan like this:

9:30 – shower and breakfast listening to a UK radio station

11:00 – a walk/run/ cycle listening to an English language music/podcast

12:00 – watching an episode of something on Netflix in English

12:30 – English lesson online

16:00 – homework/watch a video or film in English

With a routine like this you need to stick to it at least 80% of the time so that you can set yourself goals for your future learning.

2. Get a teacher.

The best way to improve your English during lockdown is with the help of a teacher. We have a variety of courses online that can help you, from 1:1 classes to our regular General English or IELTS preparation classes. Having a teacher really helps you improve your English during lockdown because you have someone dedicated and reliable to lead you in your learning. 3. Look for free lessons online.

A great and inexpensive way to improve your English online during lockdown is to get some free lessons. UK College of English (@UKCE_London) delivers 8 live stream lessons on Instagram and Facebook live every week (every 2pm and 4pm UK time Tuesday to Friday). That is 2 hours of free English lessons broken down into small twice daily bites and they are tailored for students at all levels. This is a great way to improve your English during lockdown for grammar, vocabulary and also immerses you in the English language for a small part each day.

4. Watch one thing in English a day.

There are countless films, tv shows, videos and even audio books that are in English. You might even be able to watch your favourite film in English. Just watching one thing a day is a great way to improve your English during lockdown because you are training your ears, you can put subtitles on in English, which means you can even read along at the same time so you improve your reading and most importantly; it’s enjoyable. Then one day you may not even need the subtitles to help you. Personally, I think it is the best way to improve your English during lockdown because it’s so much fun.

5. Change the language on your devices.

This is the easiest way to practise your English in a subtle, effective and constant way. The chances are that you could use your phone with your eyes closed. You have muscle memory

and subconsciously know where every button is. What’s stopping you from changing the language on your phone to English? Seriously try it. It’s the only way to get yourself started if you haven’t done it already, and it helps improve your English during lockdown and after.

6. Sing!

Yes singing helps. Seriously! Singing can be beneficial for mastering intonation, stress and weak forms that many students tend to struggle with and native speakers use. Teachers use it in the classroom all the time but it is also something you can easily do at home too. Singing is fantastic for English language learners, so turn up the UKCE playlist on Spotify and sing all your favourite tunes with us. Soon you’ll be improving your English while in the shower, cooking or even doing the boring cleaning.

Good luck to all of you trying to improve your English during lockdown and we’ll see you soon!
